We all wish we could just wake up and walk into a closet filled with the latest fashion. Like one of those fairy tale closets that would have the perfect outfit laid out and ready to wear. But, alas, we normal folks must make do with our own limited collection.
But we can take comfort in the knowledge that even famous fashion designers like Michael Kors and fashion icons like Victoria Beckham are going back to basics.
In an interview with Vogue, Michael Kors discusses how coming up with the right outfit is like preparing a complete dish, “If you have foie gras, you need a salad. And if you’re having a rich desert, then you want to have a chicken for the main.”
He uses this analogy to describe how an outfit should be made. The core pieces, your salad and chicken, should be the trench, white shirt, grey trousers and black dresses. These are the staples that every woman should have. Kors even suggests that these clothes should compromise two-thirds of the total number of your clothes.
The dessert portion of the wardrobe would be the flashy watches, floral designs or bold colored jackets. “They’re the punctuation points, the icing on the cake and the cherry – then you mix it up and you’ve got a great formula.”
He states that every woman has her own way of dressing herself, her own personal style. The trick is to be aware of your own personal brand and try to improve on it and to update it regularly.
One important update would be to ditch the heels and to opt for flat shoes. Yes, even in formal events and late night parties. In an interview with Vogue Australia, Michael Kors shares that, “The rules have changed! What you wear at the time of day – did we ever think people would wear paillettes or glam to work and flat shoes at night?” The new trend nowadays is to pair slickly cut black dresses or full matt silk skirts with – yes, you guessed it – flats.
Evidence of this new growing trend would be through Oscar de La Renta who showcased her designs with Oxfords and brogues. Even Victoria Beckham, who is known to favor heels, commented on pointy toed flats by saying, “I’ll be wearing them too, in every color,” which is a big call for the micro dynamo who easily gains 7 inches wearing heels.
So quickly ladies, now that you know the trade secrets, go check out your closet to see if you have the listed essentials. And if not, then you now have a perfectly goo d reason to go out there and shop, shop, shop!
